I’ve been thinking recently what books I use as a comfort blanket and what books have stayed with me since I read them.
- Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
- The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
- On the Road by Jack Kerouac
- The Trial by Franz Kafka
- The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald
- Harry Potter and the Philospher Stone by J.K.Rowling
- A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
- Sophie’s World by Jostein Gaarder
- The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien
What books comfort or stay with you?
I’m so happy to see Kafka on this list! 😀

I’ve read The Castle, The Trial and The Metamorphosis, and it’s really hard to say which one is my favourite. The Castle is not finished, but maybe that would be my favourite if it was finished. I’m really not sure. They all have a similar bleak atmosphere which I like.

Yeah I agree, I haven’t read The Castle but I’ve read The Trial and Metamorphosis which I love. I went to his sisters house in Prague (where he stayed a lot) apparently which was cool. Those quirky places that walking tours take you 😂

Great! I like visiting places like that!

I’m definitely going to pick up The Castle, I really like his writing style. Fun fact for you…(apparently) on his death bed he asked his friend to destroy all of his literature because no one like it while he was alive so he didn’t want anyone to when he was dead…thankfully his friend ignored that and sought out publication 😊

Yes, I know that! It’s so interesting. I guess it’s ok not to listen to someone’s last wishes. 😂

It awful to ignore it but I’m glad he did😂…ahhh all this Kafka talk is making me want to read his books again plus The Castle. I’m going to order it right now!

I agree that the Great Gatsby, hobbit and philosophers stone will stay with me for ever!! It’s difficult to think of books that will, I would say “asking for it” by Louise O’Neill as it was a theme not many write about and I was captivated by it 😄

I adore all three of those books…at first for pleasure reading but I also got the opportunity to academically read them on my degree and I loved it! Amazing, I love that books have the ability to suck people in and captivate them! What’s that about? 😊

It’s about a girl who is popular and abit of a bully, one night she makes the wrong choices which lead to her being raped and the book revolves around the question “was she asking for it?” as she is viewed as the popular girl who loves attention and so no one is on her side. Half the book is before her attack and half is after when she is in the public eye (because photos of her rape are out there). It’s strange because you empathize with the main character but at the same time you see why everyone is against her. It’s an incredible book and had me asking questions all the way through 😂

I love the Great Gatsby. It’s just so authentic…I guarantee something very similar to those events has transpired somewhere in the world at some time. I love the “eyes of God” on the sign.
I’m not very well read (yet), but the books that stay with me are Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, Mere Christianity by C S Lewis, Til We Have Faces by CS Lewis, Silas Marner by TS Eliot, and Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche
