THE ONE

The Selection changed America Singer’s life in ways she never could have imagined. Since she entered the competition to become the next princess of Iléa, America has struggled with her feelings for her first love, Aspen—and her growing attraction to Prince Maxon. Now she’s made her choice…and she’s prepared to fight for the future she wants.

Find out who America will choose in The One, the enchanting, beautifully romantic third book in the Selection series!

I read all of ‘The Selection’ books in three days but work life has taken over, forcing me to abandon my blog. I have miss it! First of all throughout this book I was still shipping Maxon and America hard.

“Break my heart. Break it a thousand times if you like. It was only ever yours to break anyway.”
“Shhh,” I urged.
“I’ll love you until my very last breath. Every beat of my heart is yours. I don’t want to die without you knowing that.”
“Please don’t,” I choked.

I like how within this book America really wanted to be with Maxon, I felt like it was just them against the world. Especially when they would go against the King’s orders and just live within the moment, in their own little bubble. I am a hopeless romantic okay! I sort of wish I was America because I personally would not mind living in a castle, wearing extravagant  dresses and fighting to be a Princess. What I really appreciated about America was that she stayed true to herself, she did not get lost within all the drama and became submissive to the King, she stood up for herself.  I was literally screaming at the book like ‘YES America! You go girl.’

Just like the other two books, this book was easy and enjoyable to read. America’s strong and stubborn inner monologue once again compelled me to keep reading and relate to her, it also created a comedic element to the writing. This book answered the questions that The Selection triggered…’who are these rebels?’, ‘what do they want?’ etc every character within this series such as Maxon, Aspen and America evolved throughout this book which make love them even more.

This book got serious quick…America made up her mind, people died, America was injured, the power of the King was a dominant feature and the selection itself got intense.

This book was also emotional! One of my favorite characters died within this book which absolutely broke me, however I understand that it allowed the story to swiftly move on. One death I was really happy that it happened because the character angered me throughout the book, which made me want to jump into the book and slap them.

I do not want to riddle this review with spoilers so if you have reads this book please comment below because I would absolutely love to discuss this book further.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk review…

5759

Next week I am studying FIGHT CLUB by Chuck Palahniuk  and I thought I would be a good student and get ahead with my reading, so I started reading it at about  2pm  and ever since the first chapter I was hooked. Captivated even, wow it is definitely a page turner.  I read it while walking to lectures, waiting for my lectures and seminars, while cooking  and while eating. I really could not put it down.  I finished the book at 11.30pm. It was one of those books where your life has to be put on hold, so you can completely emerge yourself within the narrative.

Below is a brief description on the text… (which belongs to Amazon)

Every weekend, in basements and parking lots across the country, young men with good white-collar jobs and absent fathers take off their shoes and shirts and fight each other barehanded for as long as they have to. Then they go back to those jobs with blackened eyes and loosened teeth and the sense that they can handle anything. Fight Club is the invention of Tyler Durden, projectionist, waiter and dark, anarchic genius. And it’s only the beginning of his plans for revenge on a world where cancer support groups have the corner on human warmth.

I just love a good book that leaves you both satisfied and perplexed. I absolutely love books that makes to really think and question everything.  I do not want to write too much because 1. I don’t want to give anything away and 2. ‘You don’t talk about fight club’ (I have already become nerdy about this book, oh my! I promise you will understand that soon if you pick up the book). Just know that this book will  mesmerises you with the use of direct address, which works wonderfully within this paradoxical narrative.

I have recently been learning about Freud’s psychoanalytical theory when studying Wuthering Heights and I think that Taylor Durden represents the Id so well.  Basically if you do not know, the Id is the impulsive and unconscious part of our psyche,  which responds directly and immediately to the instincts. This character is so complex, he is a zealous character who with declaration manages to portray such passion and eagerness that he also manages to talk you into a plan.  He is like the little devil that sits on your left shoulder and convinces you that bad things are good.

“hypnotic, pitiless and told brilliantly”

 Bret Easton Ellis

A few of my favourite quotes were…

“You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile.”

‘We don’t have a great war in our generation, or a great depression, but we do, we have a great war of the spirit. We have a great revolution against the culture. The great depression is our lives. We have a spiritual depression.’

I adore the way in which Palahniuk created an immeasurable amount of tension through his raw and stripped back language, it really enchanted me. I felt both scared and excited. I was fully emerged within the novel and although I have heard that this is masculine novel, I completely disagree, yes it was about blood, violence, the truth behind civilization, consumerism and dependency on a father figure. But this did not restrict me from throwing myself into the novel and fully experiencing the traumatic journey,  it just made me question; who am I? What does this mean? The clever thing about this novel is that they characters are not just fighting because they want to, they have to, it was there way to gain control in order to fulfill desire without relying society to do it.

I heard about this book and the film for years and I seriously regret not reading it sooner because it is incredible.  If you have not read it, go check it out, give it a go. If you have read it, please comment below your thoughts and feelings on it.

You can buy it on amazon if you click here.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5.

FULL UP BOOKSHELF PROBLEMS…

My University book shelf is starting to get full and I know the simple solution would be to stop buying books ! (this would also help the poor student issue) ! but I enjoy buying books. Some people find comfort in buying food or clothes, I however would eat and wear books if I could.

Today I sorted out my bookshelves to make more room and I thought I would share with you the five stages I went through when doing it. Let me know if you go through this as well or what you do…

stage 1… DENIAL

tumblr_mjwvebsJ1c1s5y03xo1_250 - Copy

I put off the task of organizing my book shelf because it means that I have to accept I cannot purchase more books. Although I have been in this denial stage for a long time because I just keep taking books home to hide them there on my overflowing bookshelf back home.
large Buying books is just such an exciting task that I do not want to let it go yet… so I believe that I can just rearrange the books to make the fit.

The next stage is SHOCK/REALIZATION…

shock-gifThat devastatingly heartbreaking moment when you realise you cannot fit anymore books any where, not even behind the front ones or on top of them. AHHHH  I hate this part because it is like being hit in the face with a ton of bricks; it physically hurts, okay! (and emotionally) I am such a nerd but I honestly do not care. Books help me to be less taciturn when in a social situation because they let me express my passionate nature.

stage 3 – The BARGAINING process…

tumblr_mcb45v8VH51riahmqo1_500 The moment you realise there is no other options…

  • Do I get rid of my precious books?     NOOOOOOOOO
  • Do I move some of them, maybe put them away in storage?
  • Do I buy another book shelf?
  • Do I just put some next to my bed, like I am ‘currently’ reading them?

Stage 4- ACCEPTANCE…

tumblr_n45zkhHOVm1stzneto1_500At this point I accepted that I cannot get rid of any of my friends, I will never let go. I decided I will sneak a few home, move my clothes into storage to make more book space and  organised the remaining once as an apology for even considering such a crime.

This leads me on to the next stage ORGANISATION…(stage 5)

yayyay

  • Do I colour coordinate the books?
  • Put the in alphabetical order?
  • Height order, maybe?
  • Even genre order?
  • Classic collection order…books of the same trilogy/series together?

I decided to mix it up and do it in the collection order (I could not split the little book families up) however I then put them in alphabetical order, regarding the authors name.  Jealous? Do you do through this as well?
